Suva was our first port after leaving Auckland and Sydney behind — the trip’s first real change of pace, and the first taste of the South Pacific atmosphere that carries hrough the rest of the crossing to Hawaii and French Polynesia.
Suva sits at the point where the Pacific meets colonial history — a waterfront market spilling produce onto the pavement, the white columns of Government House catching the morning light, and the faded grandeur of the Grand Pacific Hotel looking out over the harbour.
Inland, the pace slows further. Ratu Sukuna Park gives way to the green quiet of Thurston Gardens, and the Fiji Museum holds centuries of Pacific history in a single small building. It’s a city that rewards a slow walk more than a checklist.
